Making your own bird food: general tips

Both soft-food eaters and seed eaters enjoy bird food with sunflower seeds. Shelled sunflower seeds are also good for soft-food eaters, who otherwise prefer oatmeal or raisins. Unpeeled sunflower seeds are also suitable for seed eaters.

However, you should generally keep in mind: Don't use spicy ingredients like salted nuts or seeds. And, of course, avoid spoiled ingredients.

As a base for your sunflower seed bird food, you can use peanut butter, for example. Heat it gently in a saucepan to make it a bit more liquid. Then add other ingredients. In addition to the sunflower seeds, these could include raisins, nuts, and oatmeal.

Then let the mixture cool and form it into balls the size of suet balls. To avoid creating a net that birds can get caught in with their talons, simply take a small wooden stick and shape the mixture around it.

Bird food with sunflower seeds can also be made with beef suet, which you can buy from any butcher. This is ideal, especially in winter, as it is very energy-dense. Heat the fat in a pan over low heat and add the remaining ingredients. Pour the mixture into a cut-off Tetra Pak and let it cool in the refrigerator. You can either place the block directly in front of the birds or hang it up. You can also get creative and insert a stick or string into the cold mixture to present it to the birds wherever you like. If a Tetra Pak is too big for you, you can of course pour the liquid mixture into any other container you have available.
