Bird feeding - useful all year round

If you want to observe birds up close and would prefer to just look out the window into your garden, bird feeders are a great advantage. They're a real buzzing place at feeding time. But setting up a birdhouse in your own garden or on your patio isn't just beautiful to look at; it's a true blessing for all native small birds like tits, finches, robins, wrens, and the like.

Feeding during the colder months of the year naturally seems sensible, and it is. A small bird loses up to 35% of its body weight every night in winter to maintain its body temperature. That's an incredible and frightening figure. By providing high-energy birdseed and feeding regularly, we can literally save the lives of our little friends.

But feeding isn't the only sensible thing to do during the cold season. In suburban areas, there are increasingly fewer natural food sources for birds, as insects, which are at the top of the menu for most native bird species, also have increasingly limited natural resources to survive. Due to overfarming and the agricultural use of insecticides, we can unfortunately already observe this negative trend in many rural areas.

But when, how much and, above all, what should I feed?

In warm months:

During the warmer months from April onwards, when the frost disappears from the ground, it is recommended to increase feeding intervals and offer lighter food. In addition to feed mixes such as the " Vital Mix ," we recommend fruits such as apples, pears, hawthorn berries, elderberry, sea buckthorn, rowan, and sloe.

In cold months:

In winter, between October and March, it's important to offer high-energy feeds at shorter intervals. The " Energy Mix " combines the most nutritious feeds. Those who want to create their own feed can choose from the following: nuts, sunflower seeds, oat flakes, poppy seeds, bran, and raisins.
